few/a few/quite a few

I have few friends.我几乎没有朋友。
I have a few friends.我有几个朋友。
I have made quite a few friends.我交了许多朋友。
<辨析>三者都用于修饰可数名词，但含义不同。few 意为“很少”，“几乎没有”，倾向于否定。a few 意为“有几个”，“有一些”，有肯定的意义。试比较：
The problem is very difficult;few students understand it.这个问题很难，没有几个学生能懂。
The porblem is not quite difficult;a few students understand it.这个问题并不很难，有些学生能懂。
few 和 a few 还可在句中作主语和宾语。如：
Few of my friends were there.我的朋友中几乎没有人在那里。
I met a few of my classmates in the street.我在街上遇到了几个同班同学。
quite a few 的意思是“相当多”，“好多”。如：
There are quite a few people in the park.公园里人相当多。
