    Ⅰ. happen 是普通用语,应用广泛,指事情的发生有直接原因或带有偶然性。即:“(某人)发生了什么事——happen to sb”,或 “(某物)发生了什么情况——happen to sth”。其主语通常由 accident 或 类似it, what this , that , thing, something 等代词担任。还可表示“碰巧发生某事,——happen to do sth.”如:

    ① What has happened? 发生什么事了?¬¬¬¬¬¬–––¬

    ② What happened to you? 你发生什么事了?

    ③ It happened through your negligence. 这事的发生是由于你的疏忽。

    ④ He happened to be working. 他恰好正在工作。

    ⑤ I think it’s because I happened to like English. 我想这是因为我碰巧喜欢英语。

The story took place in 1954.这故事发生在1954年。
When the bell rang,the students took their places.铃声一响,学生们都坐在自己的座位上。
Comrade Wang took our teacher's place to give us English lessons.王同志代替我拉的老师给我们上英语课。
Tractors have taken the place of horses.拖拉机代替了马。
<辨析>take place 意为“发生”,“举行”。(其用法详见184条)take one's place 意为“入座”,“占好位置”,其所有格须和短语的(逻辑)主语一致。take sb.'s place 意为“代行某人的职责”,其所有格不须和短语的(逻辑)主语一致,可以是别人。take the place of 意为“代替职务(或工作等)”,后接人或物,接人时与 take sb.'s place 可以换用。如:
We had no one to take the place of John.(We had no one to take John's place)我们没有谁代替约翰的工作。
